A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Taminu Turaki has insisted that former President Goodluck Jonathan’s potential return to the presidential race is driven by public demand rather than personal ambition.
The faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, made the assertion while addressing journalists shortly after the group announced Jonathan as its presidential candidate in absentia for the 2027 election.
According to Ememobong, the country is in need of healing, unity, and purposeful leadership, qualities he believes Jonathan possesses.
“At this critical point in the nation’s history, Goodluck Jonathan’s possible candidacy is not about personal ambition but a response to the calls of Nigerians who desire a leader capable of restoring hope and stability,” he said.
He added that the next administration should focus on national reconciliation, patience, economic recovery, and institution-building, describing Jonathan as the most suitable person to lead that process.
The PDP faction’s endorsement comes amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general election, with several parties and groups positioning themselves for the contest.
However, Jonathan has yet to publicly confirm whether he intends to seek the presidency. The former president has remained silent on the declaration made by the Turaki-led PDP faction.
Political observers say his eventual decision could significantly influence the dynamics of the 2027 presidential race.
