The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Atiku Abubakar, has responded to comments by Nyesom Wike, who recently claimed that Atiku and the ADC would struggle to secure up to 10 percent of votes in Rivers State during the 2027 presidential election.
Wike had made the remarks during a gathering for candidates of his political coalition in Rivers State, expressing confidence that his preferred candidates would dominate future elections in the state.
Reacting through his media aide, Atiku dismissed the claim, insisting that Rivers voters are independent-minded citizens who cannot be controlled by any individual.
According to Atiku, the people of Rivers State are capable of making their own electoral choices based on the country’s current realities, including economic hardship, rising living costs, and security challenges.
He argued that Wike’s comments reflected growing concern within the ruling camp over the emergence of a stronger opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 elections.
Atiku stated that no politician, regardless of influence or position in government, has the authority to determine how an entire state will vote. He added that the electorate would ultimately decide based on which candidates they believe can improve governance and address national challenges.
The exchange is the latest sign of increasing political tension as parties and coalitions begin positioning themselves for the 2027 general elections.
