The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) fresh two-week warning strike across all federal and state universities in Nigeria, sparking renewed unrest among students nationwide.
The strike arose from unresolved demands related to salary arrears, unfulfilled revitalization fund promises amounting to billions of naira, and poor funding of public universities. ASUU President Chris Piwuna cited government insensitivity and failure to honor longstanding agreements as key reasons behind the action.In response, Nigerian students have threatened to organize nationwide protests if the government and ASUU fail to reach a resolution swiftly.
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has given the government and ASUU seven days to settle the dispute. The ongoing strike has caused widespread academic disruptions, including examination cancellations and vacated campuses, deepening frustration among the student population.
The federal government maintains that it has addressed most of ASUU’s demands and urges both parties to resume constructive dialogue.
However, the Ministry of Education reiterated the enforcement of the “No Work, No Pay” policy for striking lecturers, further complicating the crisis.Meanwhile, other university academic groups like the Congress of University Academics have distanced themselves from the strike, not endorsing the industrial action. With student protests looming, the pressure mounts on the government and ASUU to find an amicable solution to end the strike and resume academic activities across Nigerian universities.
