The Nigerian Army has initiated disciplinary proceedings against a soldier linked to the death of a commercial bus driver in Akunnu, Akoko North-East Local Government Area of Ondo State. The incident occurred on October 13, 2025, when the driver was traveling from Akure to Abuja and his vehicle broke down near a military checkpoint.
Reports indicate that tensions arose among some passengers who requested a refund for their fares. In an attempt to resolve the situation, one passenger sought assistance from a soldier stationed at the checkpoint. However, the soldier’s response was deemed unprofessional, leading to a confrontation that escalated into physical contact with the driver.
The Headquarters of the 32 Artillery Brigade in Akure condemned the soldier’s actions, stating they violated the Rules of Engagement and Code of Conduct. Following the incident, the Brigade took immediate responsibility by admitting the injured driver to a local hospital and covering all medical expenses, assigning an officer to monitor his treatment. Unfortunately, the driver passed away on October 14, 2025, after being transferred to the Ondo State Specialist Hospital and then to the Federal Medical Centre in Owo.
In a statement from Major Njoka Irabor, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, the Brigade extended heartfelt condolences to the victim’s family and promised justice. The statement highlighted the Army’s commitment to discipline and accountability, assuring that the soldier involved would face legal repercussions and that the results of the disciplinary proceedings would be made public.
The Army has also reached out to the deceased’s family and the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Ondo State, pledging to cover burial expenses and provide ongoing support. Furthermore, the Army committed to ensuring that the deceased driver’s children continue their education without interruption, appointing a liaison officer to maintain communication with the family.
