The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended its ongoing two-week warning strike, following progress in talks with government officials. ASUU President Christopher Piwuna announced the suspension on Wednesday at the union’s national secretariat at the University of Abuja.
This decision comes after negotiations showed advancement on some of ASUU’s outstanding demands.Piwuna expressed hope that the Federal Government will seize this opportunity to resolve key issues, particularly the renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement, sustainable funding for public universities, revitalisation of universities, and settling arrears related to salaries and promotions.
The union declared the strike on October 12th as a pressure tactic after the government failed to respond to these demands. The ASUU leader warned that should the government fail to fully address the issues during the strike suspension, the union will not hesitate to resume industrial action. Among the union’s demands are also an end to the alleged victimization of ASUU members at various universities and the remittance of outstanding third-party deductions.
Therefore, ASUU’s suspension of the strike aims to allow the government space to respond positively and prevent further disruption to academic activities in Nigerian public universities, which have been adversely affected by prolonged industrial actions in recent years.
The union’s decisive move reflects ongoing efforts to safeguard the quality and sustainability of public university education in Nigeria, while putting pressure on the federal government to meet the agreed conditions for the welfare of academic staff and the revitalisation of the university system.
