The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has announced a total and indefinite nationwide strike scheduled to commence on Friday, October 31st, 2025, at 11:59 pm, signalling potential significant disruptions in public hospital services across Nigeria.
Following a five-hour emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Saturday, the NEC, which is the highest decision-making body within NARD, voted unanimously for a full shutdown of medical services. This move comes after the Federal Government failed to meet or respond satisfactorily to the doctors’ 30-day ultimatum concerning their demands.
NARD President, Dr. Mohammad Usman Suleiman, communicated the decision via a statement on his X account, emphasizing the commitment of the National Officers Committee to fully implement the resolutions of the NEC.
“The NEC has unanimously directed us to declare a total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike action commencing on Friday 31st October 2025 at 11:59 pm,” Dr. Suleiman stated.
To ensure uniform compliance and prevent any sabotage, NEC has mandated each hospital branch to convene emergency congress meetings to brief members on the strike directives. The association has also outlined key preparations before the strike, including proper handover of patients, public engagement activities, media sensitization, and mobilization of local congresses.
Dr. Suleiman warned of exploitative efforts targeting the welfare of resident doctors by certain elements within and outside the government, vowing collective resistance to such plans. He urged all members to remain steadfast and assured that victory is assured.
The strike decision follows a backdrop of ongoing staff shortages in public hospitals, aggravated by the migration of medical professionals abroad in search of improved pay and working conditions.
