The sharia-enforcing police (Hisbah) in Kano, northern Nigeria, have called off the marriage of two popular TikTok stars, Idris Mai Wushirya and Basira Yar Guda, despite a recent court directive compelling their union following viral videos that were deemed indecent.
The Kano magistrate court had instructed the Hisbah to solemnize the marriage within 60 days after videos surfaced of the couple openly displaying romantic affection on TikTok, which many locals saw as contravening Sharia law. The order was grounded in Kano’s strict application of Islamic morality codes, with the Hisbah initially beginning preparations for the ceremony, including contacting families and arranging logistics.
However, the Hisbah police later announced the wedding would not proceed as ordered by the court, citing reasons linked to ongoing controversy and the sensitive nature of enforcing such unions amidst public scrutiny. This move has sparked debates over the balance between digital expression, religious law enforcement, and individual rights in the region.
