The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has applauded the ruling of the Federal High Court, Abuja, which halted the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national convention scheduled for November 15–16, 2025.
Wike described the court’s decision as “a very wise and commendable one”, emphasizing that it reaffirmed the rule of law within the party’s internal affairs.
Speaking during a meeting with Concerned PDP Stakeholders at his official residence in Abuja on Friday, Wike said the judgment marked a turning point for accountability within the PDP.
“By the grace of God, the court has made a very wise decision. It cannot be business as usual. Those who have deceived members of our great party for too long must now understand that there are laws to follow,” he said.
The Federal High Court, presided over by Justice James Omotosho, restrained the PDP from conducting its convention in Ibadan pending compliance with relevant provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the Electoral Act, 2022.
In suit no. FHC/ABJ/CS/2120/2025, the court found that the party failed to conduct valid congresses across several states before announcing plans for the convention—an omission that rendered the process defective.
Wike attributed the party’s current crisis to what he termed arrogance and impunity among some leaders, particularly within the PDP Governors’ Forum.
“Leadership is key in everything. When people become arrogant enough to say that nobody matters—when they fail to recognise those who have sustained this party—then such leadership does not mean well for the PDP,” he lamented.
The minister expressed both relief and disappointment over the situation, noting that while it was encouraging to see the court uphold due process, it was also painful to witness the internal decay within the opposition party.
> “The essence of opposition is to wrest power from the ruling party. Therefore, opposition must put its house in order and follow due process to gain public confidence,” he added.
Among those present at the meeting were PDP National Secretary, Sam Anyanwu, former governors Samuel Ortom (Benue) and Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), former senator Philip Aduda, and Rivers State House of Assembly Speaker, Martins Amaewhule.
The meeting later went into a closed-door session as discussions continued on the party’s next legal and political steps.
