Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has announced a significant increase in the monthly allowance for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in state government institutions, raising it from the previous 4,000 Naira to an unprecedented 50,000 Naira. This announcement, made during the opening of the 2025 Batch “B” Stream 1 Orientation Course at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Umunna, Bende Local Government Area, marks a major policy shift in the state’s support for corps members.
Governor Otti emphasized the importance of this enhancement, stating, “We acknowledge the contributions of corps members to the growth of Abia State. This support will ensure that their welfare is improved, and they can deliver even more in their various places of primary assignment.” The governor’s declaration was met with applause from corps members and NYSC officials, who have long called for better financial recognition from state governments alongside the federal allowance.
The increased allowance is part of Governor Otti’s broader agenda to improve youth welfare and support the NYSC scheme. He also revealed plans to address infrastructural challenges faced by the NYSC in Abia, including renovations of the Umunna orientation camp, adding perimeter fencing, office accommodation, and other essential facilities to create a more conducive environment for corps members.
Abia had previously been among the states that did not provide additional allowances to corps members beyond the federal government’s monthly stipend of 77,000 Naira. Governor Otti’s move thus signals a new era of recognition and support for the sacrifices and contributions of young graduates serving in various state institutions.
This initiative by Governor Otti aligns with federal efforts to improve the welfare of Nigerian youths, complementing the federal increase of the NYSC monthly allowance from 33,000 Naira to 77,000 Naira, which took effect earlier in 2025. By boosting the state allowance dramatically to 50,000 Naira, Abia State now stands out as a leader among Nigerian states in supporting the NYSC scheme and its members.
