The U.S. Senator Ted Cruz has called attention to what he describes as the largest coordinated crackdown on Christians in China in over four decades. The Texas senator condemned the abduction of Pastor Ezra Jin and the wrongful detention of members of the Zion Church, a significant underground Christian congregation in Beijing, emphasizing the gravity of this violation of religious freedom and human dignity.
Cruz publicly expressed his support after the U.S. Senate unanimously passed a resolution condemning the abduction. In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), he said, “I am glad to see the U.S. Senate unanimously pass resolution condemning the abduction of Pastor Ezra Jin,” noting it as part of a disturbing pattern of “systematic persecution of Christians in China.”
The senator took to the Senate floor to highlight the troubling developments, recalling that on October 10th, 2025, the Communist Party’s (CCP) launched what he termed “the largest coordinated nationwide crackdown in more than four decades against a Christian urban house church in China.”
This operation led to the arrest and wrongful detention of 23 pastors and members of the Zion Church.
“I rise today to speak about a grave matter and a clear violation of religious freedom, human dignity, and the rule of law,” Cruz declared during his speech.
The detained individuals were not accused of violence or criminal acts; rather, “Pastor Jin and the members of the Zion Church were not engaged in violence. They were worshiping. They were serving God. And for that action, they are being treated as enemies of the communist state,” he stated unequivocally.
Senator Cruz appealed to the Biden administration and international allies to take decisive action against the CCP’s escalating human rights abuses and the targeting of faith communities that operate outside government control.
Pastor Ezra Jin, the Beijing-based leader of the Zion Church, has long been a prominent figure in China’s unregistered Christian movement, which resists government oversight. Cruz’s remarks shed light on the harsh realities faced by Christians in China as they struggle daily for religious freedom against the CCP’s oppressive measures.
In a related development, Cruz reaffirmed his commitment to addressing similar issues in Nigeria, following then-President Donald Trump’s designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” over alleged genocide against Christians. In a statement on his website, Cruz expressed deep gratitude towards President Trump for the designation, emphasizing that it aligned with his long-standing efforts to protect persecuted Christians in Nigeria.
“I have fought for years to counter the slaughter and persecution of Christians in Nigeria,” Cruz said, adding that he has introduced legislation aimed at reinforcing this designation.
His proposed legislation targets those enforcing blasphemy and Sharia laws in Nigeria, which are often linked to violence against Christian communities.
He underscored the broader purpose of the designation: “Today’s designation is a critical step in holding accountable and changing the behavior of Nigerian officials who have facilitated and created an environment conducive to the outrages in Nigeria.”
Cruz said his legislation would implement additional measures, “including targeting those who implement blasphemy and sharia laws in Nigeria,” and pledged to work alongside the administration and congressional colleagues to advance the bill and enact necessary protections.
President Trump, in announcing his decision on his Truth Social platform, remarked on the existential threat facing Christianity in Nigeria. “Thousands of Christians are being killed. Radical Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter,” he wrote. “I am hereby making Nigeria a ‘COUNTRY OF PARTICULAR CONCERN’—But that is the least of it.”
He directed congressional representatives to investigate and report on the situation, emphasizing that the United States cannot stand idly by while such atrocities occur in Nigeria and other countries.
The enforcement of Sharia law is predominantly practiced in Nigeria’s northern regions and has been frequently associated with reports of killings justified as blasphemy enforcement.
