The management of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Iseyin campus, Oyo State, has announced a two-week suspension of academic activities following the tragic death of a 200-level female student in the Department of Agricultural Economics under the College of Agricultural Sciences and Renewable Natural Resources. The student was fatally injured in a hit-and-run incident on the Iseyin/Saki Road on Friday morning, when a yet-to-be-identified commercial driver ran her over and fled the scene.
The heartbreaking event sparked immediate outrage among students on campus, who staged a protest blocking parts of the busy Iseyin/Saki road. In their anger, the protesting students confirmed the driver’s escape and set the commercial vehicle involved ablaze.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the university’s Registrar, Olayinka Balogun, expressed the management’s deep sorrow over the loss.
“The management of LAUTECH, Ogbomoso, deeply regrets to announce the tragic passing of a 200-level student of the Department of Agricultural Economics, who was fatally wounded by a hit-and-run driver in Iseyin. This heartbreaking incident has cast a shadow over our university community, and we extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased.”
Acknowledging the emotional toll on students and staff, the university management decided to suspend all academic activities at the Iseyin campus for two weeks with immediate effect. As a result, “all students in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Renewable Natural Resources are to proceed on a two-week break and are expected to return to classes on Monday, November 24, 2025,” the Registrar added.
Furthermore, Registrar Balogun urged students to “remain calm and safe during the period, and to honour the memory of their late colleague.”
This tragic incident has deeply shaken the LAUTECH community, emphasizing the urgent need for improved road safety and security measures to protect students and residents in and around the Iseyin area. The identity of the driver responsible for this fatal hit-and-run remains unknown, and investigations are expected to follow as the university mourns the loss of one of its promising students.
