In the aftermath of the November 8th, 2025, governorship election in Anambra State, Chioma Ifemeludike, the African Action Congress (AAC) candidate, boldly declared herself the winner despite the official results favoring incumbent Governor Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
Posting on her verified social media platform, Ifemeludike emphasized integrity over political manipulation, stating: “Integrity stands firm and higher than political deception. I’m a winner!” This declaration resonated as a pointed rejection of the prevalent culture of political desperation and electoral malpractice that has historically overshadowed Nigerian elections.
Ifemeludike, a respected activist and filmmaker, is among the few female contenders in this high-stakes political contest. Throughout her campaign, she fervently championed transparency, increased women’s participation in politics, and value-driven leadership. Although she secured a modest 292 votes in the election, her stance highlights a growing demand for clean and credible electoral processes.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Governor Soludo, who also previously served as Central Bank of Nigeria governor, the winner after he secured 422,664 votes, dominating all 21 local government areas in the state. Soludo’s closest opponent was Nicholas Ukachukwu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who obtained 99,445 votes.
However, the election was not without controversy. Reports surfaced of vote-buying, voter intimidation, and technical issues with the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines, disrupting voting in various polling units. Several parties, including the Labour Party (LP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), accused APGA agents of engaging in “massive vote-buying” and leveraging state resources to influence results.
Despite the official outcome, Ifemeludike’s defiant message underscores the persistent demand among certain voters and activists for genuine democratic practices in Anambra and Nigeria at large. Her campaign and vocal opposition to electoral malpractice commendably challenge the status quo and advocate for a more transparent political future.
Governor Soludo’s re-election consolidates his party’s political dominance in the South-East, but the electoral controversies remind stakeholders that the path to credible elections and sound governance remains contested and fraught with challenges.
