President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reportedly dispatched a high-level Nigerian delegation to the United Kingdom to engage with officials of the UK Ministry of Justice regarding the ongoing case involving former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu.
According to All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain Ayekooto Akindele, who shared a video of the delegation’s arrival on Facebook, the team includes Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, and Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Lateef Olasunkanmi Fagbemi.
The delegation was received at the Nigerian High Commission in London by Ambassador Mohammed Maidugu, the Acting High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.
Ekweremadu has been detained in Britain since March 2023 following allegations of organ harvesting. He and his wife, Beatrice Ekweremadu, were arrested by the London Metropolitan Police and charged with trafficking a young man, David Nwanini, for the purpose of harvesting his kidney for their daughter, Sonia.
In May 2023, an Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court sentenced Ekweremadu to nine years and eight months imprisonment after finding him guilty of conspiracy to arrange the travel of the 21-year-old victim for exploitation. His wife, Beatrice, was sentenced to four years and six months, while co-defendant Dr. Obinna Obeta received a ten-year jail term.
Beatrice Ekweremadu was released in January 2025 and has since returned to Nigeria, while Ike Ekweremadu remains in custody in the UK.
The Tinubu administration’s diplomatic intervention reportedly aims to explore legal and humanitarian options surrounding Ekweremadu’s continued imprisonment.
