Contrary to earlier report and viral social media reports, that the former Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, is dead. The false reports had fueled confusion online, suggesting that Obiano, who held office from 2014 to 2022, had died in London.
This claim has been firmly dismissed by his former Commissioner for Information, Mr. C-Don Adinuba. In a phone interview on Friday, Adinuba described the rumours as “provocative” and “unfounded.”“I have been asked about a provocative rumour regarding the death of former Governor Willie Obiano. The rumour is not true. I just spoke with him and his family a few minutes ago. He is hale and hearty in Houston, United States, where he resides,” Adinuba stated.
He further clarified: “Contrary to the reports, Obiano is not in London and has not been hospitalised. He is strong, healthy, and doing well in the US. Ignore this claim—it is not from a credible source. Obiano is very much alive.”Obiano’s personal publicist, Tony Nezianya, told reporters he had no information to confirm the death rumour, saying, “I cannot confirm this; I am not aware of any such news.”Obiano, who was born on August 8, 1955, in Aguleri, Anambra East Local Government Area, succeeded Peter Obi as governor and handed over to Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo in March 2022. He is currently under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over allegations of N4 billion fraud.
Adinuba urged the public to disregard false reports, emphasizing that such claims cause unnecessary distress to Obiano’s family, associates, and the people of Anambra State.Multiple outlets have now verified that Obiano remains “alive and hearty,” with no evidence to support the spread of death rumours.
