In a dramatic escalation of internal tensions, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Saturday expelled several of its most controversial figures — including Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike, former Ekiti governor Ayodele Fayose, and ex-National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu — during its national convention at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Ibadan.
The decision, delivered before thousands of cheering and stunned delegates, reshapes the PDP’s internal power structure and sets off what legal experts describe as “an imminent season of court battles.”
Bode George Sets the Stage
The turning point came when party elder and former National Vice Chairman (South), Chief Olabode George, moved a motion calling for the immediate expulsion of the listed members for “actions considered injurious to the party’s cohesion.”
The motion was quickly seconded by Samaila Buga, Chairman of the PDP in Bauchi State, effectively sealing the fate of Wike and the others.
This marks the party’s most decisive disciplinary action in years — a direct response to months of factional conflict, public confrontations, and alleged anti-party activities.
A Charged Convention Under Heavy Watch
The convention, already marred by litigation and claims of procedural irregularities, drew a massive crowd of party loyalists dressed in PDP colours and chanting solidarity songs throughout the stadium.
However, the mood outside the stadium was far less celebratory. The complete shutdown of major roads around Adamasingba, Eleyele, Dugbe, Mokola, Sango, University of Ibadan, Ojoo, and Agodi Gate created severe traffic disruptions for Ibadan residents. Only 17 states and the FCT had been accredited as of 1:35pm, despite the initial 10am kick-off time. The election committee reportedly pushed for extra time to allow late-arriving delegates from remote regions.
The main voting exercise — moved to 4pm — was set to take place at the newly erected cubicles positioned at the centre of the pitch.
