The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a suspect linked to an explosion that sparked panic near a commercial bank in Owo, Owo Local Government Area, on Saturday.
The incident caused brief chaos as residents and passersby fled the area when thick smoke rose from the scene. Nearby traders hurriedly locked up their shops over fears of a possible attack.
In an official statement on Sunday, Police spokesperson Olusola Ayanlade disclosed that preliminary investigations traced the explosion to a banger, adding that one suspect—Ayoola Daniel Ojumu, a resident of Owo—had been apprehended.
According to Ayanlade:
Ojumu confessed to his involvement in the act.
His alleged accomplice, said to be the individual who ignited the banger, is currently at large, and efforts are ongoing to track him down.
Ayanlade stressed that the Command will not tolerate actions capable of threatening public safety, especially with the festive season approaching. He urged parents and guardians to caution their children during and after the celebrations.
Residents were advised to remain calm but vigilant, and to promptly report suspicious activities to security agencies.
The Police further confirmed that the arrested suspect will be charged to court upon the completion of investigations.
