A Yoruba socio-political organization, the Yoruba Revolutionary Movement (YOREM), has renewed its advocacy for Yoruba self-determination, calling for the potential creation of an Oodua Republic. The group stated that Nigeria’s political framework has failed to ensure equity, and ongoing systemic injustices make self-rule an unavoidable option.
In a statement marking its 26th anniversary, signed by National Coordinator Comrade Wale Balogun, YOREM emphasized that its agitation is anchored in long-standing political disparities within the Nigerian federation. The organization said it was formed on November 21, 1999, to challenge structural inequities and champion the political liberation of the Yoruba nation.
“From inception, we committed to a sovereign Yoruba nation, whether within a truly federal Nigeria or independently,” the statement read.
YOREM also strongly condemned the life imprisonment of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), describing the ruling by the Federal High Court in Abuja as politically motivated and discriminatory. The group contrasted the handling of IPOB with the government’s treatment of armed herdsmen, highlighting perceived ethnic bias in national security policies.
“We call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reconsider Kanu’s conviction and explore all lawful and political options, including a state pardon, in the interest of justice and national reconciliation,” the statement added.
While reiterating that Yoruba autonomy is its immediate demand, YOREM stressed that its ultimate goal remains the establishment of an Oodua Republic should Nigeria persist on its current trajectory of systemic dysfunction.
Despite marking 26 years of activism, the organization noted that it is not in a celebratory mood, citing persistent insecurity, displacement, and socio-economic neglect across Yorubaland.
“Our struggle continues. We insist on Yoruba autonomy, the right to self-determination, and justice for all, including Nnamdi Kanu. The Yoruba nation will neither be subdued nor silenced,” the statement concluded.
