Nigeria has granted protective asylum to Fernando Dias da Costa, the leading opposition presidential candidate in Guinea-Bissau, following credible threats against his life after a recent military coup derailed the country’s election process. The Nigerian Embassy in Bissau confirmed on Monday that da Costa was given shelter inside its compound, with President Bola Tinubu personally authorizing the intervention and requesting the ECOWAS Stabilization Mission to provide additional security.
The dramatic action followed last Wednesday’s coup, which saw military officers topple the government before the electoral commission could announce official results. Both incumbent President Umaro Sissoco Embaló and da Costa had prematurely claimed victory, fueling political tension and chaos. Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed alarm over the developments, demanding a swift return to constitutional rule and pledging to work alongside ECOWAS to restore democratic order.
Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar stated, “This decision responds directly to the grave threats against Mr. da Costa’s life,” adding that Nigeria’s move aligns with its commitment to peace and stability in West Africa. The Minister’s letter to ECOWAS emphasized Nigeria’s role as a regional stabilizer, seeking to prevent escalation, foster cohesion, and uphold human security across the sub-region. Presidential special assistant Alkasim Abdulkadir described the asylum offer as “leadership in safeguarding human security,” not interference.
In response to the coup, ECOWAS convened an emergency summit, suspending Guinea-Bissau from the bloc until democratic norms are restored. As ECOWAS chair, Nigeria reiterated its support for regional efforts to expedite normalcy and protect all political actors at risk. Da Costa, known for his fierce criticism of Embaló’s administration and allegations of electoral fraud, remains under the Nigerian embassy’s protection as the region awaits the restoration of order.
