In a troubling incident on Tuesday morning, unidentified gunmen attacked a vehicle carrying three staff members of Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, near the Sam Mbakwe Airport in Owerri, Imo State.
The assault occurred between Umuowa and Ihite junction, a short distance from the airport, while the team was en route to the facility for official duties. Eyewitness reports indicate that the attackers, believed to be fleeing, opened fire on the vehicle as it approached the airport corridor.
Njoku Ukoha, Otti’s Chief Press Secretary, confirmed the attack, emphasizing that the affected officials were part of an advance team and not part of the governor’s convoy. Ukoha stated, “In the early hours of today, December 2nd, an advance team of three members from the Office of the Executive Governor of Abia State, His Excellency Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, on duty to Sam Mbakwe Airport, Imo State, was attacked by unidentified gunmen.”
He clarified the details, noting, “The incident occurred between Umuowa and Ihite junction, shortly before the Sam Mbakwe Airport Junction in Imo State.”
Ukoha reassured the public by confirming, “The general public is hereby informed that the convoy of Governor Otti was not involved in this attack, and no lives were lost during the unfortunate incident.”
As of this report, the Imo State Police Command has not issued a statement regarding the attack.
