President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated a cadre of seasoned public servants, including the former Rivers State Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral (Retired) Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, as ambassadors to foreign countries. The fresh appointments come amid the President’s ongoing diplomatic and administrative restructuring efforts.
Vice Admiral Ibas, who previously served as the Chief of Naval Staff from 2015 to 2021 and was later appointed by President Tinubu as Sole Administrator of Rivers State to restore stability, is among the key figures selected for ambassadorial postings. His nomination highlights Tinubu’s confidence in veterans with extensive security and diplomatic experience to represent Nigeria’s interests abroad.
In a statement issued by the Presidency, President Tinubu emphasized the need for appointments that reflect commitment, experience, and the ability to navigate complex international landscapes. Regarding Vice Admiral Ibas, the statement noted, “His wealth of experience in security and diplomacy makes him an ideal candidate to advance Nigeria’s foreign policy.”
Vice Admiral Ibas’s role as Rivers State Administrator involved calming political tensions and overseeing the state’s affairs when governance was paralyzed by conflict. President Tinubu had earlier declared the suspension of the governor and other members of the Rivers State Executive and Legislative arms for six months, appointing Ibas as Administrator “in the interest of the good people of Rivers State,” while affirming that the judiciary would continue functioning independently.
The appointments of these ambassadors are part of Tinubu’s broader diplomatic strategy amid a complex global geopolitical environment, including soaring tensions with key partners such as the United States.
