General Christopher Gwabin Musa officially took charge as Nigeria’s Minister of Defence on Friday at the Ship House headquarters in Abuja, following a whirlwind nomination, Senate confirmation, and presidential swearing-in that underscored President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s urgency to bolster the nation’s security apparatus amid persistent insurgency, banditry, and kidnappings.
The transition stemmed from the resignation of Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar on health grounds on December 1, 2025, prompting Tinubu to nominate Musa—the retired 18th Chief of Defence Staff—in a formal letter to Senate President Godswill Akpabio that same day.
The letter explicitly stated: “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated General Christopher Gwabin Musa as the new Minister of Defence,” while noting, “President Tinubu conveyed General Musa’s nomination as the successor to Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, who resigned on Monday.”
Tinubu expressed firm confidence, adding that General Musa possesses the ability “to lead the Ministry of Defence and further strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture.”
Senate’s Expedited Screening and Confirmation
The Senate conducted a rigorous screening at the Committee of the Whole on December 3, lasting over three hours with questions and answers, before confirming Musa via voice vote, as announced by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Tinubu praised the legislature’s speed on his verified X handle @officialABAT, posting: “I want to commend the Nigerian Senate for its expedited confirmation of General Musa yesterday. His appointment comes at a critical juncture in our lives as a nation.” He described Musa as “a fine gentleman” whose “breadth of experience would serve Nigeria at a defining moment,” highlighting his leadership record and grasp of the country’s complex security challenges, and concluding with “God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
On December 4, Tinubu administered the oath of office to the 58-year-old general, born December 25, 1967, at the Presidential Villa, as shared by Spokesman Bayo Onanuga on X and in official releases. The Presidency underscored Musa’s credentials: “General Musa, 58, on December 25, is a distinguished soldier who served as Chief of Defence Staff from 2023 until October 2025.
He won the Colin Powell Award for Soldiering in 2012.”
Musa’s Frontline Expertise and Bold Commitments
Musa’s career includes commanding Operation Hadin Kai against Boko Haram and ISWAP in 2021, leading Sector 3 of the Multinational Joint Task Force, and serving as Nigeria Army Infantry Corps Commander before his CDS role from June 19, 2023, to October 24, 2025. Speaking to journalists after the swearing-in, he vowed: “I assure Nigerians of results in shortest possible time,” adding that the security situation “will improve for the better” as he swings into action immediately. Upon assuming duties at Ship House, Musa reiterated to reporters: “Nigerians will see results,” while calling for public support in combating threats.
Stakeholders, including the Centre for Crisis Communication, welcomed the appointment, urging Musa to address bureaucratic obstacles in security operations. The move positions the Tinubu administration to leverage Musa’s kinetic and non-kinetic strategies for enhanced stability.
