Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has drawn public criticism after a brief exchange with Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, during the 10th coronation anniversary celebration of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi.
A video from the event, which circulated widely on Monday, shows Governor Adeleke approaching the podium to pay tribute to the monarch and congratulate Mrs Tinubu on receiving the traditional title “Yeye Asiwaju Gbogbo Ile Oodua.” Before giving his speech, the governor began to sing—a familiar part of his energetic public persona.
While the audience reacted with amusement, the First Lady moved toward him and quietly urged him to continue with his formal remarks instead of singing. The brief intervention has since triggered varied reactions across social media.
Some Nigerians viewed her action as disrespectful. Akintunde Bello, a senior aide to Governor Adeleke, said the First Lady should be cautioned. Political figure Dele Momodu also criticised her, saying she acted beyond her constitutional role and embarrassed the governor in front of an international audience.
Several online commentators echoed similar sentiments, arguing that her gesture undermined the authority of a sitting state governor.
Others, however, defended Mrs Tinubu, saying the moment was light and misunderstood. Dayo Fashola, an aide to former Osun State Governor Gboyega Oyetola, insisted that the exchange was not tense, adding that timing concerns may have influenced her request, especially since visibility for helicopter travel reduces after dark.
Some supporters argued that her action showed courtesy, suggesting she chose to address the governor directly rather than express any concerns indirectly.
The incident has continued to spark debate online, highlighting ongoing tensions around protocol, respect for public office, and the expectations placed on Nigeria’s First Lady during official events.
