Chief Kayode Amusan, a two-time former member of the House of Representatives who represented Abeokuta North/Odeda/Obafemi-Owode Federal Constituency from 2003 to 2011, has urged Nigerians to support security agencies in their efforts to combat insecurity across the country. He described national security as a shared responsibility, calling on citizens to stay vigilant, report suspicious activities, and avoid politicizing or undermining the work of security personnel.
Amusan commended President Bola Tinubu’s administration for its proactive measures against insecurity, including enhanced coordination among security agencies, investments in equipment, and direct community engagement. “From my observation, President Bola Tinubu’s administration has shown commitment to tackling insecurity by strengthening coordination among the security agencies, investing in equipment and engaging communities more directly,” he stated during an interview with journalists. “We are beginning to see improvements in intelligence gathering and rapid response in some critical areas,” he added, while acknowledging the absence of quick fixes and the need for sustained funding, consistent strategies, and collaboration across government levels and communities.
The APC governorship aspirant for Ogun State in 2027 outlined key responsibilities for security agencies, emphasizing inter-agency cooperation, intelligence sharing, technology adoption, discipline, and personnel welfare. “For the security agencies, cooperation is key. No single formation can solve the problem alone. Intelligence must be shared, technology must be embraced, discipline must be maintained and personnel welfare must remain a priority,” Amusan stressed. “If we combine community support with professional synergy among the agencies, we will significantly reduce insecurity,” he further noted.
Amusan declared his interest in the 2027 Ogun State governorship race on the APC platform, advocating for leadership selection based on competence rather than strict zoning. “Ogun State has always been built on fairness, competence and inclusiveness. While I understand the discussions around zoning, what is important is giving the people the freedom to choose the most capable individual to lead the state into the future,” he said.
He positioned himself as equipped for the role through his public service experience and global insights, promising focus on economic expansion, youth empowerment, agriculture, healthcare, unemployment reduction, industrial growth, and infrastructure. “The state is ripe for a new phase of transformational leadership. The state needs a leadership that prioritizes economic expansion, youth empowerment, agricultural development, health care development, reduce unemployment rate, industrial growth and infrastructural rejuvenation,” Amusan explained.
“My experience in public service, coupled with my exposure and understanding of global best practices, places me in a position to offer solutions that are practical and impactful. I want to build a state where our youths have opportunities, our industries thrive and every local government feels the presence of government. Ultimately, my desire is to serve and elevate Ogun State to greater heights,” he added.
Amusan condemned the recent failed coup attempt in Benin Republic, praising Nigeria’s intervention and stressing the importance of democratic transitions.
“Any attempt to overthrow a democratic government is unfortunate and unacceptable. Across Africa, we must continue to reinforce democratic institutions, strengthen governance and address the underlying issues, such as economic hardship or political dissatisfaction, that sometimes give rise to such attempts,” he remarked. “Countries thrive when leadership changes occur through constitutional means, not through force. Stability in Benin Republic is crucial for peace in the region, especially given our shared borders,” he continued, highlighting Nigeria’s stake as West Africa’s largest economy.
On the economy, he acknowledged federal reforms in foreign exchange and investment attraction as necessary despite their challenges, urging expanded support for local industries, agriculture, infrastructure, naira strengthening via exports, and inclusive stakeholder engagement. “With the right balance between reform and compassion, Nigeria will achieve sustainable growth,” Amusan concluded.
