Suspected bandits have killed a former Vice Chairman of Bukkuyyum Local Government Area in Zamfara State, Hon. Mu’azu Muhammad Gwashi, despite collecting a ₦15 million ransom from his family.
Gwashi was abducted about five months ago and kept in captivity before he was killed last weekend. A family member, Muhammad Lawal Gwashi, confirmed the incident, explaining that the kidnappers initially demanded ₦30 million. The family’s inability to raise the amount immediately reportedly prolonged his detention.
According to him, the abductors later reduced the ransom to ₦15 million, which was paid when they brought the victim to a meeting point. However, the kidnappers allegedly insisted on receiving the remaining ₦15 million balance and refused to release him, leading to his eventual killing.
The incident has heightened fear in the community, with many residents reportedly fleeing their homes in search of safety.
Meanwhile, troops of the Nigerian Army’s 6 Brigade/Sector 3 of Operation Whirl Stroke have recorded successes against criminal activities in Taraba State.
In a statement issued by the Acting Spokesperson of the Brigade, Lt. Umar Muhammad, soldiers foiled an armed robbery attack on December 6, 2025, along the Manya–Takum Road in Takum Local Government Area. The troops responded swiftly to a distress call, forcing the attackers to flee and recover an AK-47 rifle, a magazine, and three rounds of ammunition.
In a separate operation in Kufai Amadu, Takum Local Government Area, soldiers rescued two abducted travellers after four men from Bauchi State were reportedly kidnapped while seeking directions. Two other victims were earlier able to escape, while efforts to rescue the remaining captives are ongoing.
Additionally, troops conducted an intelligence-led raid in Garin Sambo, Tau Village, Ardo-Kola Local Government Area, where they recovered two pump-action guns, 13 cartridges, two motorcycles, and four mobile phones. Two suspects were arrested in connection with the operation.
