A media aide to the Federal lawmaker representing Idanre/Ifedore Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Festus Akingbaso, Adebayo Femi Johnson, has clarified that the revival of the Mare as a cultural fiesta in Ondo State is not attributable to only one person but involves the governor, the current Commissioner for Culture and Tourism in the State, the current lawmaker representing the Federal Constituency, and other notable stakeholders.
In a public statement seen by our correspondent, Femi emphasized that politics should not divide the community, as the revival of the Mare festival is being politicized despite being the result of unanimous efforts from various stakeholders in the Local Government Area.
In his words:
“The good people of Idanre, both at home and in the diaspora, deserve clarity and unity regarding the restoration of our cherished Mare Festival. The circulated memo discrediting Hon. Festus Akingbaso’s contributions is divisive and counterproductive to the spirit of our community. We must rise above such narratives that fuel discord and focus on collective progress.”
“The Mare Festival’s revival is a triumph for all Idanre indigenes, driven by the collaborative efforts of the state government under His Excellency, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the Hon. Commissioner for Tourism, Hon. Afolabi, and countless stakeholders including Hon. Festus Akingbaso, local government chairmen (past and present), traditional rulers, youths, students, market women, civil servants, and community leaders like Dr. Anthony Omolola, Prof. Gbenga Oke, Small Alhaji, Fessywest himself, Princess Omotara, Chief Pius Akinyelure, Mr. Agbelusi, and the rest of the media. Each played a role in ensuring our cultural heritage thrives, and no single individual or group should be singled out to sow division.”
“What is our problem in Idanre? Are we so consumed by politics that we allow it to divide us? Are we so idle that we weaponize narratives to survive? Instead of spreading unverified claims or disparaging any individual, we should channel our energy into supporting and sustaining the festival’s success. The contributions of all stakeholders, past and present lawmakers, community leaders, and citizens deserve appreciation, not condemnation.”
