The Osun State Government has confirmed a banditry attack on Ora-Igbomina, a border community in Ifedayo Local Government Area, revealing that a military-backed rescue and security operation has been ongoing for the past three days.
Governor Ademola Adeleke disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday after an emergency State Security Council meeting held in Osogbo. The statement, signed by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, described the incident as a serious security breach.
The governor expressed sympathy with residents of Ora-Igbomina, assuring them that security agencies are working together to rescue the abducted victim and prevent further attacks, especially in border communities.
According to the statement, the ongoing operation involves the Nigerian Army, Police, Department of State Services (DSS), and other security agencies. Governor Adeleke noted that the operation is being conducted cautiously to avoid jeopardising rescue efforts.
“From the moment of the unfortunate incident, our security forces launched rescue and protection operations. A delicate operation is ongoing, and we must ensure the integrity of the process,” the statement said.
The governor also announced plans to strengthen security infrastructure across the state, including the deployment of refurbished armoured vehicles and the procurement of additional patrol vehicles. He added that the state’s joint security patrol programme is under review and will be reintroduced to enhance public safety.
Addressing concerns about possible spillover attacks from neighbouring states, particularly Kwara, Governor Adeleke issued new operational guidelines for the Osun Amotekun Corps. He directed that Amotekun must work closely with the Nigeria Police, warning that uncoordinated operations would no longer be tolerated.
The governor further announced the resumption of full Amotekun operations under the new guidelines, stressing the importance of the outfit in tackling emerging security threats.
He also advised residents to limit late-night activities, especially during the festive season, urging citizens to remain security-conscious as criminals often target night gatherings.
Earlier reports indicated that gunmen attacked Ora-Igbomina on Monday night, allegedly abducting a retired customs officer and killing a farmer while fleeing through nearby farmlands. The victim was reportedly ambushed at his residence, while the farmer was shot after being encountered by the attackers during their escape.
Governor Adeleke reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to protecting lives and property and assured residents that all necessary measures are being taken to restore peace.
