The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) chapter, has awarded scholarships totalling ₦6.2 million to 31 indigent students of the institution.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Chairperson of ASUU–OOU, Dr Ganiyu Yinusa, said the initiative reflects the union’s continued commitment to equity, student welfare and expanded access to university education.
According to him, each beneficiary received ₦200,000 to support the payment of school fees and other approved charges for the 2025/2026 academic session. He explained that the financial assistance was designed to ease the burden on students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds and help prevent disruptions to their education.
Yinusa disclosed that the Indigent Students Scholarship Scheme was funded mainly through voluntary donations of sitting allowances earned by internal members of the University Council during several council meetings. These donations were complemented by direct financial contributions from the ASUU–OOU chapter.
He described the gesture as a reflection of collective sacrifice, responsibility and solidarity within the university community, noting that the scholarship scheme forms part of ASUU’s broader effort to promote inclusive education, encourage academic excellence and reduce student dropouts caused by financial hardship.
The union reiterated its belief that no qualified student should be denied access to higher education because of financial constraints and commended members of the University Council for their uncommon show of personal sacrifice in support of education and human capital development.
ASUU congratulated the beneficiaries and urged them to remain focused, disciplined and committed to their studies, stressing that the scholarship represents both financial support and a call to excellence.
The statement added that the intervention reinforces ASUU’s role not only as an advocate for staff welfare and university autonomy, but also as a key stakeholder in student development, social justice and sustainable access to quality education in Nigeria.
