The Nasarawa State Government has approved the recruitment of 1,000 additional teachers to strengthen basic education across the state’s 13 local government areas.
The announcement was made by the Executive Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr. Kassim Mohammed-Kassim, in Lafia on Tuesday. The statement followed his receipt of a letter of commendation from Governor Abdullahi Sule, presented through the Secretary to the State Government, Labaran Magaji, in recognition of the board’s achievements under his leadership.
Dr. Mohammed-Kassim highlighted reforms implemented since taking office, including the redeployment of teachers from administrative offices back to classrooms and enhanced monitoring of school projects. He noted that about 4,000 qualified teachers had previously been posted to offices, of which 1,009 have been redeployed, with plans to redeploy another 1,000, particularly to rural communities facing acute teacher shortages. He also called for special allowances to motivate teachers willing to serve in hard-to-reach areas.
Expressing gratitude for the recognition, Mohammed-Kassim reaffirmed SUBEB’s commitment to improving the quality of education in the state, stressing that a strong educational foundation is essential for sustainable development.
Magaji, presenting the governor’s commendation, said the gesture recognized the visible improvements in Nasarawa’s primary education system under Mohammed-Kassim’s leadership. He noted that redeploying redundant staff to classrooms and strict oversight of school projects had significantly enhanced service delivery and infrastructure quality, including classrooms and sanitation facilities.
The SSG also praised the Executive Chairman for organising the state’s first-ever Basic Education Summit, aimed at addressing challenges and advancing the development of basic education across Nasarawa State.
