Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has honoured the late former governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, describing him as a visionary leader whose legacy continues to inspire governance in the state.
Speaking to journalists on Saturday in Akure, Aiyedatiwa highlighted Akeredolu’s role as a strong advocate for state policing and his efforts in mobilising South-West governors to establish the South-West Security Network, popularly known as the Amotekun Corps, to enhance regional security.
The governor noted that Akeredolu’s initiatives helped redefine Nigeria’s subnational security framework and laid the groundwork for discussions on decentralised, intelligence-led policing at the national level.
Reflecting on their long political association, Aiyedatiwa praised the late governor’s commitment to leadership, mentorship, succession planning, and institutional stability. He emphasised Akeredolu’s dedication to grooming future leaders and ensuring orderly, constitutional transitions in governance.
He also acknowledged the profound impact of Akeredolu’s guidance on his own leadership values and public service approach.
“As the government and people of Ondo State, we remember and honour Arakunrin Akeredolu on the second anniversary of his passing. We celebrate his passion for development, and his advocacy for justice, equity, and unity,” the governor said.
Aiyedatiwa pledged continued support for the foundation established by the Akeredolu family to preserve the late leader’s legacy, praying for his soul to rest in perfect peace. He encouraged residents to draw inspiration from Akeredolu’s courage, service, and principled leadership, which continue to shape governance in Ondo State.
