The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has announced that it is awaiting the results of a detailed technical investigation into the road accident involving Nigerian boxing star Anthony Joshua, which occurred on Monday along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.
Preliminary findings from the FRSC’s crash observatory suggest that excessive speed may have been a key factor in the incident. The crash, which happened around 12 noon near the Sinoma axis of Sagamu, involved a black Lexus SUV carrying Joshua and a stationary red Sinotruck.
The FRSC reported that five adult males were involved in the collision. Two individuals, identified as Joshua’s friends, died instantly, one person was injured, and two others escaped without harm. Joshua himself reportedly sustained minor injuries.
FRSC spokesperson Olusegun Ogungbemide, speaking on Sunrise Daily, explained that while an initial assessment was conducted at the scene, a full technical report is necessary to determine the exact cause. “Our officers examined the crash site and made preliminary observations based on impact and road layout, but the final report will provide confirmation,” he said.
Ogungbemide noted that the truck involved was parked on the shoulder and had not broken down. He added that although there were no active speed-monitoring devices at the crash site, the damage and impact force indicate that the SUV was likely exceeding the federal highway speed limit of 100 km/h.
Addressing emergency response, he confirmed that patrol teams arrived at the scene within three minutes. Joshua was reportedly responsive and received immediate medical attention.
The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, has instructed that the technical investigation be completed and the findings made public.
