The driver of the vehicle conveying the heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, during the fatal crash on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway has been discharged from hospital and may face prosecution for reckless driving
Checks by The Guardian at Duchess International Hospital, Lagos, where Joshua received medical care after the accident, confirmed that the driver has been treated and released. He has since made a statement to security authorities.
Police spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed that the driver has been discharged and is currently cooperating with investigators. He added that the case remains under investigation and prosecution is being considered.
Meanwhile, officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) at the Sagamu interchange disclosed that the driver of the truck involved in the crash fled the scene and has been declared wanted.
Earlier findings by the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) revealed that a burst tyre on the SUV Joshua was travelling in caused the driver to lose control before crashing into a stationary truck.
TRACE spokesperson, Babatunde Akinbiyi, said preliminary investigations also pointed to excessive speed and wrongful overtaking as contributing factors to the accident.
Joshua, 36, survived the crash and is reported to be in stable condition. However, two members of his team, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, died at the scene. The deaths were confirmed by Matchroom Boxing, with chairman Eddie Hearn expressing deep sorrow over the loss.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing as authorities work to determine full liability for the crash.
