A photograph shared by the presidency showing President Bola Tinubu’s meeting with Rwandan President Paul Kagame has sparked online debate after it was discovered to carry a Grok AI watermark.
Tinubu was reported to have met Kagame on Sunday in Paris, France. The image from the meeting, posted on the president’s official X account, showed a visible watermark linked to Grok, a generative artificial intelligence tool developed by xAI, Elon Musk’s company.
Grok is used for real-time search, image generation, and image enhancement.
The same photograph was also shared by Dada Olusegun, the president’s special assistant on new media, drawing criticism from several social media users who questioned the authenticity of the image.
Some users accused the presidency of circulating an AI-generated photo, with one commenter asking why Grok was used to produce an image of a meeting that reportedly took place.
However, sources within the presidency told TheCable that the image was not generated by artificial intelligence but was enhanced using Grok.
According to the sources, the original photograph taken during the private lunch meeting was of poor quality and was subsequently improved with the AI tool before being shared publicly.
Tinubu had departed Lagos for Europe on December 28 as part of his end-of-year vacation.
