The Ogun State Government has unveiled an ambitious housing delivery strategy for 2026, committing a budgetary allocation of more than N100bn to construct at least 3,000 new housing units across the state as part of efforts to ease the chronic housing deficit and deliver quality, affordable homes for residents.
The announcement was made on Monday by Mr. Jamiu Omoniyi, the Commissioner for Housing, during a detailed briefing at the Ministry of Housing’s Conference Room in the Governor’s Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
Highlighting the state’s track record, Omoniyi explained that the current administration under Governor Dapo Abiodun has already delivered over 5,000 housing units during the past six and a half years, a figure he said surpasses those of all previous governments combined. The new housing push aims to achieve a total of 10,000 homes by the end of Abiodun’s tenure in May 2027.
“In line with the 2026 budget projection of over N100bn, the housing sector is poised to deliver an additional 3,000 units of affordable housing across the state, including infrastructure-supported site-and-services schemes,” Omoniyi told journalists.
A key component of the plan is a low-income housing initiative around Siun in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area. The ministry has earmarked 2,500 affordable apartments, including two- and three-bedroom units, specifically for workers and low-income residents.
“We are planning to replicate the success recorded at Kobape around Siun. For the first phase, which commences in the first quarter of the year, we are delivering 579 housing units,” Omoniyi said.
He added that land for the project has already been secured and that land clearing will begin before the end of the month, with construction progressing in earnest. The first phase is expected to be delivered by May or June, after which subsequent phases will follow.
The project will be implemented jointly by the Ministry of Housing, the Ogun State Housing Corporation, and the Ogun State Property and Investment Corporation, ensuring coordinated execution and oversight.
Beyond the 3,000 homes earmarked for 2026, the commissioner outlined additional flagship developments designed to modernise the state’s housing landscape and support urban growth, includes; International Conference Centre at Gateway International Airport, Iperu, featuring a 2,500-seat banquet hall, Appeal Court Headquarters and Residential Facilities, Ibara GRA Phase II with 50 duplex units, New residences for commissioners, political appointees, and assembly members, Expanded housing estates at strategic locations such as Prince Courts Estate (Siun), ISEYA Court (Oke-Mosan), Havila Court (Ibara), and Havens Court (Igbeba, Ijebu-Ode), and Continuation of the Ibara GRA Urban Regeneration Scheme Phase II.
Omoniyi noted that Ogun State closed 2025 on a strong footing, having delivered 30 duplexes at the Ibara GRA Cluster 1 extension and 100 duplexes at the President Muhammadu Buhari Estate. Work is also ongoing on the Ibara GRA Urban Regeneration Project, where more than 150 modern housing units have been completed so far.
The Commissioner emphasised that the government’s housing investments are not only addressing affordability but also supporting slum regeneration and sustainable urban development across the state.
“Having delivered more housing units than all previous administrations combined, our state remains firmly on track to complete over 10,000 affordable homes by the end of this administration,” he reaffirmed.
Omoniyi also commented on Nigeria’s broader housing challenge, which is estimated to include a nationwide deficit of about 28 million units. He referenced recent remarks by the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, who said that addressing this shortfall would require building approximately 550,000 housing units annually over the next decade.
Dangiwa noted that rapid population growth and insufficient housing supply have contributed to overcrowded and substandard living conditions that fall below international habitability standards.
