The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has cautioned residents of Ekiti State against engaging in multiple voter registration, warning that violators will face sanctions in accordance with the law.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Ekiti, Mr Bunmi Omoseyindemi, said anyone found guilty of double registration or other irregularities during the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise would be appropriately dealt with.
Omoseyindemi issued the warning while addressing journalists in Ado-Ekiti during the announcement of the commencement of the second phase of the CVR exercise in the state. He explained that the new phase was introduced to accommodate eligible residents who were unable to participate in the first phase, as well as those seeking to update their voter information.
He urged political stakeholders and community leaders to mobilise eligible voters, especially youths who have recently turned 18, to take advantage of the exercise and register ahead of the forthcoming governorship election and other future polls.
The REC recalled that the first phase of the CVR, which began in August, was suspended in December to allow for the display of voters’ data for claims and objections. He noted that the process enabled corrections of errors such as misspelt names and inaccurate personal details.
Omoseyindemi also disclosed that INEC has scheduled the Ekiti State governorship election for June 20 and has released the provisional list of candidates. He added that political parties are expected to complete substitutions before the publication of the final list of candidates.
