Some youths on Friday staged a protest at the national secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC), calling on President Bola Tinubu to remove Nyesom Wike as minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The protesters accused Wike of showing disrespect to party leaders and members, displaying placards with messages such as “Tinubu, sack Wike now,” “No minister is above APC,” and “Stop disrespecting APC leaders.”
The demonstration follows a recent public disagreement between Wike and Ajibola Basiru, the APC national secretary, over political developments in Rivers State.
Basiru had earlier advised Wike to resign from his ministerial position, accusing him of being overly involved in Rivers politics and failing to respect sitting governors as party leaders in their states.
In response, Wike warned Basiru to stay out of Rivers State politics, describing the state as a “no-go area” and cautioning against what he termed unnecessary interference.
The FCT minister has since taken steps opposing the re-election bid of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, following the governor’s defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC in December.
Wike has accused Fubara of breaching an agreement reached before President Tinubu lifted the emergency rule earlier imposed in the state.
