Lecturers at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), under the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), have threatened to disrupt students’ resumption over the non-payment of their salary arrears.
The union had embarked on strike last month, crippling academic activities on campus. Chairman of the AAUA branch of ASUU, Dr. Boluwaji Oshodi, said the lecturers had shown enough patience but could no longer endure the hardship.
“We have been patient and tolerant for a long time, but this time we won’t be again. Our people have been pushed to the wall. We are not seeing any effort that signals the state government is ready to do the right thing,” Oshodi stated.
He added that several attempts to meet with Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa had failed, stressing that lecturers had been forced to conduct examinations “on empty stomachs.”
However, Ondo State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Igbekele Ajibefun, dismissed claims that the government had abandoned the university.
Ajibefun explained that the state government had been in talks with the union to resolve the crisis and assured that the matter would soon be addressed. He further emphasized that Governor Aiyedatiwa’s administration had consistently released monthly subventions to all state-owned tertiary institutions, including AAUA.
