United States federal agents have shot and killed a man in Minneapolis, Minnesota, during an ongoing immigration enforcement operation in the city.
Authorities from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said Customs and Border Protection officers were executing a targeted operation involving an individual wanted for violent assault when the encounter escalated. DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin explained that the suspect approached officers with a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun, prompting agents to fire in self-defense. Medics administered immediate aid, but the individual, a 37-year-old U.S. citizen, was pronounced dead at the scene.
This incident marks the third fatal shooting by federal officers in Minneapolis this month. Earlier in January, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers fatally shot a 37-year-old woman, Renee Nicole Good, who was acting as a legal observer during protests against immigration enforcement operations.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz condemned the recent shootings and called on federal authorities to withdraw personnel from the state, describing the situation as “sickening” and expressing concerns over the deployment of what he described as “violent, untrained officers.”
