The Oyo State Police Command has intercepted a truck conveying items suspected to be explosive devices during a routine stop-and-search operation in Saki, Oyo State.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday, describing the operation as intelligence-driven and a major operational breakthrough.
According to Olayinka, the truck and the suspected explosive materials were immediately secured and taken into police custody to prevent any potential threat to public safety.
He said the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Femi Haruna, upon receiving a briefing on the incident, ordered a comprehensive investigation to determine the nature and intended use of the materials.
Specialised officers from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit, alongside personnel from the Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Unit, were deployed to safely secure the items and subject them to forensic examination.
“Detailed forensic analysis has commenced, in addition to a thorough investigation aimed at establishing the exact composition of the materials and their intended purpose,” the statement said.
The driver of the truck has been arrested and is currently cooperating with investigators as efforts continue to unravel all circumstances surrounding the interception.
The police command also commended the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for his support and strategic leadership, which it said has strengthened intelligence-led and proactive policing across the country.
The command reassured residents of Oyo State that there is no cause for alarm, stressing that the Nigeria Police Force remains committed to safeguarding lives and property.
It added that members of the public would be kept informed as investigations progress.
