Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has again hinted at his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election, linking his political ambition to ongoing local elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Obi made the remarks while campaigning for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate ahead of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) elections. Speaking to supporters, he urged them to vote for the ADC candidate, describing the poll as an important step in his broader political journey.
According to him, success in the AMAC election would strengthen his political movement and future plans. He assured supporters of his active involvement in the coming national contest, stressing that their backing at the grassroots level remains crucial.
Since Obi’s association with the ADC, supporters — including members of the Obidient Movement — have intensified calls for the party to adopt him as its presidential flagbearer for the 2027 election.
However, the ADC’s spokesperson, Bolaji Abdullahi, has urged caution, warning against divisive rhetoric and emphasising the need for unity within the party.
Speculation has also grown over a possible Peter Obi–Rabiu Kwankwaso alliance, following Kwankwaso’s refusal to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The rumours have further fuelled discussions around opposition cooperation ahead of 2027.
Meanwhile, supporters of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar have renewed calls for Obi to consider a vice-presidential role, similar to the 2019 arrangement. Obi has, however, dismissed such suggestions, reiterating that he plans to contest the 2027 election as a presidential candidate.
Obi also appealed to supporters to mobilise votes for his preferred candidate in the AMAC poll, describing their support as vital to his political mission. He reaffirmed his stance that, if elected president, he would serve only a single four-year term.
