Abdulrasheed Maina, the former chairman of the defunct Pension Reform Task Team (PRTT), has been hospitalised after collapsing outside his office on Tuesday, his media aide, Emmanuel Nweke, confirmed.
According to Nweke, Maina lost his balance while trying to enter his office, fell on the staircase, struck his head, and briefly lost consciousness. The aide attributed the incident to complications from an untreated knee injury that Maina has reportedly been struggling with.
“The fall was caused by complications from an untreated knee injury, which made him lose balance and hit his head on the staircase,” Nweke said. He added that medical personnel at the scene provided first aid before Maina was rushed to a private hospital in Abuja for urgent treatment.
“Dr. Maina is under close medical observation,” Nweke said. “Preliminary assessments by attending doctors have suggested that arrangements for air ambulance evacuation might be necessary if his condition does not stabilise soon.”
Nweke noted that Maina’s family and medical team are closely monitoring his condition and appealed to the public for prayers and respect for their privacy during this critical time.
Maina was recently released from the Kuje Correctional Centre, where he served an eight-year sentence after being convicted of pension fraud. In November 2021, a Federal High Court in Abuja found him guilty of money laundering involving over ₦2 billion, mostly belonging to deceased pensioners. The Court of Appeal in May 2023 upheld both his conviction and sentence.
This is not the first time Maina has collapsed publicly; in December 2020, he also slumped during his trial proceedings.
