The Edo chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has demanded that John Odigie-Oyegun, a former national chairman of the party and ex-governor of Edo state, repay what it described as outstanding loans and unpaid membership dues amounting to over ₦150 million.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Jarrett Tenebe, chairman of the APC in Edo, said the alleged liabilities were incurred during Oyegun’s years as a member and leader of the party, including his tenure as the party’s pioneer national chairman between 2014 and 2018. He said the party had made several formal requests for repayment without success.
Tenebe added that the claimed debts include loans allegedly advanced to Oyegun while he was APC national chairman, as well as accumulated membership dues which, according to the party, were not paid throughout his period of membership.
The Edo APC said it decided to make the demand public due to Oyegun’s continued refusal to settle the alleged obligations, noting that the party had provided him with a platform for his political rise.
Oyegun, who recently defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as part of an opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general election, dismissed the claims as baseless and politically motivated.
Reacting to the allegation, he described it as laughable and said it reflected the ruling party’s discomfort with the growing influence of the opposition. He accused the APC of resorting to hostility rather than constructive political engagement and alleged that the party had contributed to instability and intimidation in Edo state.
Oyegun has since emerged as a vocal critic of the APC and President Bola Tinubu following his defection.
