The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) recently conducted targeted airstrikes that successfully dismantled multiple illegal crude oil refining clusters in the creeks of Etche Local Government Area, Rivers State. This operation, carried out on October 7, 2025, was part of ongoing counter-oil theft missions aimed at combating economic sabotage and environmental damage in the Niger Delta region.
According to Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the NAF’s Director of Public Relations and Information, precise intelligence and aerial surveillance identified active refining sites hidden within a densely forested area near Owaza. The aircrew engaged these illegal operations with accuracy, halting the illicit processing of stolen crude oil. Following the strikes, concerns were raised about potential damage to a local gin distillery in the Umuebele community, though no casualties were reported.
In response, the NAF has launched an investigation consistent with its Civilian Harm Mitigation and Response Action Plan (CHMR-AP) to verify these claims and ensure accountability. The NAF reaffirmed its commitment to conducting intelligence-driven and precise operations while prioritizing the safety of civilians and property. This mission exemplifies the Air Force’s dedication to upholding Nigeria’s territorial integrity and supporting other security agencies in the fight against criminal activities such as oil theft.
Additionally, the Defence Headquarters announced that troops from the Joint Task Force South-South Operation Delta Safe recently thwarted oil theft involving over N224 million worth of stolen products, seizing multiple crude oil ovens, boats, storage tanks, and arresting suspects involved in these illegal activities. Overall, these coordinated military efforts reflect a sustained push to eradicate illegal refining and promote environmental preservation and economic security in oil-producing communities within the Niger Delta area.
