President Bola Tinubu has broken his silence on the recent decision to sack Nigeria’s top military service chiefs, describing the move as necessary to strengthen the nation’s security architecture amidst persistent rumors of internal unrest and alleged coup plots within the Armed Forces.
In a statement released through his Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, President Tinubu announced sweeping changes in the military leadership. General Olufemi Oluyede was appointed Chief of Defence Staff, replacing General Christopher Musa. Other new appointments include Major-General W. Shaibu as Chief of Army Staff, Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke as Chief of Air Staff, and Rear Admiral I. Abbas as Chief of Naval Staff. Major-General E.A.P. Undiendeye retained his position as Chief of Defence Intelligence.
President Tinubu expressed profound appreciation for the outgoing Service Chiefs for their patriotic service and leadership during a critical period marked by ongoing military operations against terrorism, banditry, and other violent crimes across Nigeria. However, he emphasized that the reshuffle was geared towards further enhancing professionalism, vigilance, and unity within the Armed Forces.
The President charged the newly appointed Service Chiefs to justify the confidence reposed in them by deepening professionalism, vigilance, and comradeship that define Nigeria’s military forces. This action is part of a broader effort to reposition the military to achieve stronger security outcomes for the country.
The timing of the overhaul follows months of speculation and rumors of coup threats, which the Defence Headquarters has repeatedly denied. The new military leadership is expected to bring fresh energy and reinforce coordinated efforts in national security management as Nigeria continues to face significant security challenges.
All changes take immediate effect as President Tinubu reaffirms his commitment to consolidating a robust, disciplined, and united military to safeguard Nigeria’s sovereignty.
