On October 25th, 2025, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, has been unanimously elected as the new President of the Nigerian Boxing Federation (NBF). The election took place at the federation’s elective congress held at the Package B Indoor Sports Hall of the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
Edun, a well-known economist and passionate boxing enthusiast, was elected unopposed, securing all 12 votes cast by delegates. His emergence as president signals a renewed hope for the sport’s development in Nigeria, with stakeholders optimistic about structural reforms and grassroots development under his leadership.Speaking after his victory, Edun pledged to elevate Nigerian boxing to international prominence through transparent governance, inclusion, and strategic developmental initiatives.
“Our goal is to restore Nigerian boxing to its rightful place on the global stage through transparency, inclusion, and strong grassroots development,” Edun said.
The election for the Vice President position saw a competitive race, with Hon. Omonlei Imadu, representing the South-West zone, defeating his North-Central counterpart Mighty Mike by eight votes to four. Imadu, recognized for his consistent grassroots boxing efforts, described Edun’s presidency as a “new dawn” for the sport.Imadu expressed commitment to working closely with the new president to achieve the federation’s vision, emphasizing the importance of unity and collaboration. He also commended the National Sports Commission, led by Chairman Shehu Dikko and Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade, for ensuring a transparent and fair electoral process.
Edun’s election as NBF President marks a critical milestone for Nigerian boxing, promising strategic reforms that will harness local talent and boost the nation’s competitive edge internationally.
