Former presidential aide, Laolu Akande, has stated that President Bola Tinubu’s directive to withdraw police officers from VIPs and VVIPs should also apply to members of his own family, including his son.
Akande made the remark while commenting on the government’s recent policy to limit the deployment of police officers as personal security details for political figures and top government officials. The directive, aimed at reducing the misuse of state security resources and promoting equal application of security measures, has sparked public debate over its consistency and enforcement.
According to Akande, enforcing the policy uniformly, including within the president’s household, is essential to ensure fairness and credibility. “If the withdrawal of police from VIPs is genuine, then it must also cover those close to the president, including his son,” he said.
The former aide added that the policy could restore public confidence in government transparency and reinforce the principle that security provisions are meant for the state, not individuals.
