Senator Jonah David Jang, a former governor of Plateau State and a prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has publicly denied circulating claims that he plans to defect from the party to another All Progressive Congress (APC) or political platform, dismissing them as unfounded and politically motivated at a time when speculation over political realignments is intensifying ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement released on Friday through his media consultant, Clinton Garuba, Jang confronted the persistent social media chatter and news reports suggesting he might abandon the PDP for the ruling APC or another political platform.
“His political convictions have not changed, and there is no contemplation whatsoever of defecting to the APC or any other political platform,” Garuba said, emphasising the former governor’s steadfast commitment to his party.
The statement also addressed rumours linking Jang to broader reshuffles within Plateau’s political landscape, including speculation that Governor Caleb Mutfwang was preparing to exit the PDP. According to Garuba, those reports are equally baseless.
“The former governor is not aware of any plan, real or imagined, by Governor Caleb Mutfwang to leave the PDP,” the media consultant said, adding that the allegations appear to be driven by “those eager to sow confusion, tension, and mistrust within the political space in Plateau State.”
Garuba called on political commentators, party supporters, and news outlets to dismiss the rumours and focus instead on measured, responsible political discourse rather than feeding into speculative narratives.
“Jonah David Jang remains committed to supporting the stability of the PDP, strengthening democratic institutions, and fostering unity among stakeholders and citizens of Plateau State,” the statement added. “We urge the public, party faithful, and the media to disregard these baseless reports and continue to promote accuracy and responsible political discourse.”
Rumours about defections among Nigerian political elites have been widespread in recent weeks, with several high-profile figures across parties denying similar claims. While such chatter reflects the fluid nature of Nigerian politics ahead of the 2027 elections, Jang’s firm rebuttal underscores his intent to remain in the PDP fold.
