U.S. President Donald J. Trump has claimed that American naval forces intercepted and took control of an Iranian-flagged cargo vessel in the Gulf of Oman following a tense encounter at sea.
In a statement shared on his social media platform, Trump alleged that the ship—identified as TOUSKA—attempted to breach what he described as a U.S.-enforced naval blockade in the region. He said the vessel, reportedly close to 900 feet long, ignored multiple warnings issued by U.S. forces.
According to Trump, the USS Spruance (DDG-111), a guided missile destroyer operated by the United States Navy, intercepted the cargo ship and ordered it to stop. When the crew allegedly failed to comply, he claimed the warship disabled the vessel by targeting its engine room.
He further stated that U.S. Marines boarded the ship and have since taken full control. Trump added that the vessel is under sanctions imposed by the United States Department of the Treasury over alleged prior illegal activities.
“As of now, we have full custody of the ship and are inspecting its contents,” he said, describing the operation as a firm enforcement of U.S. policy.
However, there has been no independent confirmation of the incident from the Pentagon or other U.S. authorities. Iranian officials have also not issued any formal response.
The Gulf of Oman remains a strategic and sensitive maritime corridor, linking the Arabian Sea to the Strait of Hormuz.
The region has seen repeated tensions between Washington and Tehran, with past incidents involving commercial vessels and naval forces raising concerns about stability and global shipping security.
Observers warn that if confirmed, the reported interception could further strain already fragile relations between the United States and Iran.
