The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State has cancelled its earlier decision zoning the 2027 governorship ticket to the Abia Central Senatorial District, reopening the contest to all aspirants across the state.
The reversal came barely 24 hours after the State Working Committee had announced the zoning arrangement, a move that immediately triggered disagreement within the party ranks.
Prominent APC figures, including Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, and Chief Mascot Uzor Kalu, were among those who faulted the initial decision.
In a fresh statement issued on Friday by the party’s State Publicity Secretary, Uche Aguoru, the APC said the decision followed consultations with the national leadership, which intervened after receiving complaints from stakeholders.
According to the statement, the national leadership directed that the zoning arrangement be set aside and that the party revert to the existing status quo.
“Following concerns raised by stakeholders and leaders of the All Progressives Congress in Abia State, the national leadership has reviewed the matter,” Aguoru said.
“Consequently, all zoning arrangements earlier announced by the State Working Committee have been jettisoned. The party will maintain the status quo.”
The APC further clarified that the decision effectively throws the governorship race open, allowing interested aspirants from all zones in the state to contest.

“All aspirants interested in contesting for positions, including House of Assembly, House of Representatives, Senate and Governorship, are free to obtain nomination forms before the deadline,” the statement added.
The development is expected to intensify political manoeuvring within the Abia APC as aspirants reposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
