The Nigeria Democratic Congress has officially zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria for a single four-year term, in a move expected to reshape the opposition’s political calculations ahead of the next general election.
The decision was reached during the party’s National Convention held in Abuja on Saturday after delegates overwhelmingly approved a motion presented by Afam Victor Ogene, the lawmaker representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency of Anambra State in the House of Representatives.
Under the arrangement adopted by the party, the presidential ticket will remain in the South for one term before automatically reverting to Northern Nigeria after the completion of the four-year tenure.
The resolution is widely seen as strengthening the position of former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, and other southern aspirants interested in contesting the party’s presidential primary.
Obi recently joined the NDC alongside former Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, amid ongoing efforts to build a formidable opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 elections.

Political observers believe the zoning arrangement could help stabilise internal party interests while positioning the NDC as a major contender in the next presidential race.
Although the party has yet to release its official timetable for the primaries, the latest development has effectively cleared the path for southern aspirants to begin consultations and prepare for the nomination process.
