The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has directed all Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) to suspend preparations and publicity for the planned nationwide voter revalidation exercise.
The commission had earlier announced that the exercise would begin on April 13, 2026, as part of efforts to update the voter register ahead of the 2027 general elections.
However, in a new directive issued by INEC’s secretary, Rose Oriaran-Anthony, RECs were instructed to halt all arrangements pending further notice from the commission.
INEC also announced a change in its scheduled meeting with RECs, stating that the session initially planned to hold physically on April 9 will now be conducted virtually via Zoom. Commissioners have been advised to remain in their respective states and await further details for the meeting.
The commission noted that all activities related to the voter revalidation exercise, including logistics and publicity, should be put on hold until new directives are issued.
INEC expressed regret over any inconvenience caused and assured stakeholders that updates would be communicated in due course as preparations for the electoral process continue.
